Why are you trying to tear the Church apart?
Christ warned us about men like you, that would try to cause riffs in the end days.
You, sir, have "forgotten your first love."
The Church should be uniting now.
Just remember His warning...."you will be as if you never were."
You are being and causing a "stumbling block".
You are being what Satan loves...a deceiver of the TRUTH!!!

I was born into the Armstrong Cult during the Summer of Love. I spent what was, in retrospect, the relatively innocent period of the 1970's Petra-fied (insiders will get it) by the apocalyptic visions of HWA and his minions.

Many of the cultural oddities inflicted on my family and friends came down from on high (dictation of hair --and skirt-- length and style, carob good - chocolate bad, instructions on how a woman was to bend over to retrieve dropped items without overly exciting the men, prohibitions on everything from rock music to makeup) were minor lifestyle irritants relayed to us on a weekly basis by a minister who delighted in controlling and dictating the everyday details of our lives. We realized that most of these things were coming straight down from on high at the whim of headquarters. God was leading Mr. Armstrong (snigger), and with a very firm hand, Mr. Armstrong made it clear to us that he was leading "his ministers," who would in turn lead us lesser sheeple. To defy or question the judgment of the minister therefore was to defy and question God.

I don't know why I therefore thought that Bob League's infamous Donkey Sex sermon was an exception to this rule. A ministerial aberration. The Donkey Sex sermon wasn't his first sermon on sexual deviance, and it certainly wouldn't be his last. I confess to being somewhat surprised to later learn that similar sermons alerting the membership to the very real and present danger of bestiality had been a relatively widespread WCG phenomenon. I should have known. One ex-member suggested that perhaps this sermon had been prompted by someone at HQ who attended a certain...ahem..."donkey show" in Tijuana. Now there's something that bears contemplating.

I can't have been more than four or five when I first learned --from the pulpit -- about the improper usage of donkeys by the vile, sinful female sex. I know I was that young because I was still relegated (for the duration of a weekly 2-hour sermon) to a blanket on the cold concrete floor of a drafty high school auditorium, along with the rest of my generation. I remember staring at the green, orange and white pattern of my baby quilt and thinking to myself that young though I may be, I did not think what our minister was describing was suitable subject matter for the mixed company represented by our 700+ congregation of young and old.

With the benefit of age and wisdom, I actually have to chuckle when I think of the horrified squirming of a captive audience of elderly men and women as they listened to the painfully graphic descriptions of what not to do with a donkey. Is it funny? I don't know. I just know if you don't laugh, you'll cry.

Apparently Melvin Rhodes is no longer "banned" by UCG, at least for public proclamation. He has a prominent blog post on the front page of UCG.org today about P.M. Netanyahu's speech to Congress.

Also: have you seen the letters section of The Journal #170 - where some "Ambassador" disfellowshipped the paper over Old English fonts?

If I didn't know better, I'd think the whole thing was satire - and it might be, but I've been around COG's too long to assume that.

The prayer section of the COG-based website Haggai114.net currently has this:

> John A. Pinkston is serving a prison sentence in Georgia, his wife is Anita; <

I confirmed tonight this is the John Pinkston who founded the Congregation of God Seventh Day, outside Atlanta. I think it's a spinoff of Church of God Intl. For more than a decade he hosted the "Watch America" radio broadcast, preaching prophecy and standard Armstrong/COG doctrines. (It had a late-night Saturday slot on WWL-AM.)

The Watch America website is now taken down, "parked" with GoDaddy (whatever that means). The Congregation's website has become very bare-bones, and a search for "Pinkston" tonight brought up nothing.

So what put Mr. Pinkston in prison, a la Ron Weinland? I'm not sure. The pastor who confirmed this to me only called it a "sad situation". Perhaps you can investigate it and fill in the details.

NO2HWA said...

Pinkston was found guilty of two child molestations and was sent to prison for 20 years. Read more here. http://armstrongismlibrary.blogspot.com/2015/07/john-aubrey-pinkston-former-wcg.html

dear sir or madam,

Are we not supposed to expose evil but at the same time examine ourselves critically? You reek of hypocrisy.

You should be ashamed, the Church members have the adversary and his demons attacking them already why would you add yourself to that side.

Strengthen and chastise the Church in a manner that is beneficial to followers of the Messiah.

Your website looks like it is made and edited by the adversary and that says enough!

I say this to your shame!

I am the webauthor of the Field Guide to the Wild World of Religion at
http://www.isitso.org/guide/ . The website has extensive research and commentary on religious groups and leaders which use abusive and/or deceptive methods to attract and keep followers. I have had over a million visitors since it was put up on the web in 2001.

As a former member of the Worldwide Church of God (1968-1978) and the Church of God, International (1978-1988...my husband was a pastor of a CGI group for seven years) I have a particular interest in providing documentation and commentary on the Armstrong movement. The Field Guide has an extensive section on the Radio/Worldwide Church of God and its offshoots which begins at
http://www.isitso.org/guide/wcg.html .

I also have a blog called "Meet MythAmerica" which contains research, documentation, and commentary on aspects of American history which have been commonly glossed over. https://meetmythamerica.wordpress.com/

I share all the above to lead up to calling attention to the latest series of blog entries on the Meet MythAmerica blog, titled "The Wonderful World Tomorrow--What It WON'T Be Like." Those familiar with the WCG will recognize the title as a take-off on one of Herbert Armstrong's most requested booklets back in his heyday. The 11-part series documents in particular the sordid story of Armstrong's astoundingly racist approach during the era of the American Civil Rights Movement.

I am convinced that most members of WCG offshoot groups are utterly clueless about what Armstrong actually taught about race relations. His record in this area has been totally white-washed since his death by those who still promote his legacy. The story needs to be told. I hope this documentation will be shared far and wide. The series begins at the following link address.

https://meetmythamerica.wordpress.com/2015/05/10/the-wonderful-world-tomorrow-what-it-wont-be-like-intro/

I'm not sure how to make the links in this comment section "clickable." So lease just copy and paste any of the weblinks above into your browser's address box.

Thanks for considering this material, and passing along the links if you feel they would be of interest to your own circle of contacts.

This is the address for sending get-well cards to the ailing Roy Holladay. After reading some of the reports on this site of top COG ministers' homes, I could not resist calling it up. What I saw admittedly has me wondering.

This was posted by Kieren Underwood on theTrumpet.com website. He was subsequently fired and marked by the church for standing up to their injustices.

Hello all,

I have been writing for theTrumpet.com for nearly three years, and have been a student at Herbert W. Armstrong College for nearly four. Many of you have spoken with me at services, invited me to your homes, and been my friends.

But let me tell you a little bit about what I’ve learned.

If you don’t believe any of the following, check DTSearch to see for yourself. Or better yet, go to the library in the Hall of Administration and check the physical Plain Truth archives.

No man knows “the day or the hour” of Christ’s return, right? Well, Mr. Armstrong thought he did.

• In 1934, Mr. Armstrong said the “Day of the Lord” would begin in 1936. (see attachment for his diagram)
• "...the year 1936 will see the end of the Times of the Gentiles.... we may expect the present worldwide depression, time of trouble and fear of war to continue until the year 1936!... quickly after that time, we may expect to see the heavenly signs of the sun and moon becoming dark, the stars falling.... which shall be followed by the ‘Day of the Lord.’" (The Plain Truth, June-July 1934, Herbert Armstrong, p. 5)

• In 1940, he said it was 3-4 years away:
• "...Armageddon, we believe, must be at least three or four years away..." ("Democracy Doomed!" The Plain Truth, April-May 1940, Herbert W. Armstrong)

• In 1953, according to Dr. Hoeh’s chronologies, HWA said it would probably come no later than 1982.
• "Now HERE IS SOMETHING STARTLING! Herman Hoeh, in his eye-opening article you will read in the June number of The PLAIN TRUTH on the Times of the Gentiles shows that the Times of the Gentiles—if chronologies are correct—will come to their final end in the year 1982." ...
• "IF THE TIMES OF THE GENTILES END IN 1982, in October, as Mr. Hoeh has it figured, THE INVASION OF AMERICA AND THE GREAT TRIBULATION MUST BEGIN NOT LATER THAT MARCH-APRIL, 1972!" (Herbert W. Armstrong, Co-Worker letter, May 22, 1953)

• In 1969, it was only 25 years off.
• "If that unseen Hand does not exist, humanity will not survive on earth another 25 years, or less! …” (The Ambassador College Correspondence Course, Lesson 5, 1969, p. 15)

Mr. Armstrong made—literally—hundreds of these false predictions. (See: https://hwarmstrong.com/prophet-1.htm or http://www.exitsupportnetwork.com/mike_ep/exam/dates.htm) Between 1934 and 1946, he prophesied that: the plagues of Joel would occur in 1935, Mussolini and Hitler were the 7th resurrection of HRE, WWII was the last war—leading to Armageddon, Mussolini (and later, Hitler) would unite the 10 kings of Europe, Hitler would “inflict terrible Tribulation upon God’s saints,” etc.

Mr. Flurry (“raising the ruins”) continues in this manner:

• Remember it was to be “one generation” after the death of HWA that Christ returned? Well, it’s been 32 years.
• It was the “last hour” in 2001. And then it was the “last half of the last hour” in 2008. Let me do some quick math… (The back of the textbook says: 2015)
• In a sermon in 2008, during PYC, Mr. Flurry said he believed the Tribulation would be here in “five years or less.” Go ahead, check your notes.
• Remember the “Hebrews” revelation? Three or four years, right? Start counting down.
• I hear that in the last ministerial conference, Mr. Flurry said it could be as soon as one year! Boy, better pack your bags!

Ask yourself, how many times have I heard, “it’s only a few short years”?

Remember President Obama was the Antiochus? (By the way, I’ll give $1000 to the person who can tell me where the Bible mentions THREE end-time Antiochus-like figures—you know, the church, political, and European ones.) Well, I guess the world didn’t end with Obama, so it’s time for Jeroboam!

Anonymous said...

Continued from Underwood's letter

Yes, Jeroboam is surely President Trump. Never mind that there were TWO Jeroboams who ruled Israel. Jeroboam I turned Israel away from God (around 920 BC). Jeroboam II was the one who Amos prophesied against (around 780 BC). They are separated by nearly 140 years. Can someone tell me which Jeroboam is Mr. Trump? Also, set your countdown, because when Mr. Trump doesn’t send you to Jerusalem, this church is finished.

But what about Brexit? Remember that 1956 quote on the front cover of the Trumpet: “Britain will not be part of it”? Guess where it came from. A book published in 1956 called “1975 in Prophecy.” Let me give you another quote from that book. Mr. Armstrong was writing of the famines which would hit America: “Indications of prophecy are that this drought ... will strike sooner than 1975— probably between 1965 and 1972!” Go ahead and check the book yourself—it’s on DTSearch. And the internet (http://www.herbert-armstrong.org/Books%20&%20Booklets/1975%20in%20Prophecy%20(1956).pdf).

Modern-day Assyria is Germany, right? How do you know? Really, how do you know? Did you research it? Only a handful of people in this church could even give a semblance of an answer. (Maybe send Mr. Palmer or Mr. Vejil an email.) Perhaps they might mutter something about “they’re both warlike.” Mr. Armstrong spent a whole TWO sentences proving it in “The United States and Britain in Prophecy.” Go ahead, ask the people in your congregation how they know. Better yet, ask it as a Spokesman Club topics question. Or even better still, go ask one of those confused people in the Assyrian Church of the East. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_Church_of_the_East) They’re so deceived (Rev 12:9) they don’t even know what race they are! (Attached is a critique of theTrumpet.com’s “The Remarkable Identity of the German People.”)

But Mr. Armstrong “restored all things,” right? Have a look at the Christadelphians—founded in 1848. Doctrines include: Bible is inspired word of God; rejection of Trinity; Father and Son are separate; Kingdom of God is to be set up on earth; reject immortality of the soul; death is merely sleeping for saints; full-immersion baptism; Christ will reign on earth 1000 years; must keep commandments; hell is just the grave; mainstream Christianity has been paganized. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christadelphians#Beliefs)

Mr. Armstrong restored all these things—except that they were already established … 40 years before he was born.

But he gave us the “master key” for prophecy, right? The United States and Britain are Manasseh and Ephraim, right? Did you know that theory was created in 1794, and was most popular in the 1870s? It’s called British-Israelism. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Israelism) And just like the Assyria-Germany theory, you probably don’t know much of the details. Did you check the Irish annals yourself? Did you check to see whether Tea-Tephi was a real person, or just made up? (“Tea Tephi” is NEVER mentioned in Irish history. She is a combination of two real people: one called “Tea” and the other “Tephi.”) And did you know that “Tephi” is called a “daughter of Pharoah” in one of the only times she is mentioned in the Irish annals? Did you know that Ollam Fodla (apparently Jeremiah) is mentioned in the Irish legends as a native “Milesian king”? And that he lived around 1000 BC (not 500 BC)? Did you check? Or did you take Mr. Armstrong’s word as gospel? See David Baron for a critique of British-Israelism—written in 1915! (https://archive.org/details/historyoftenlost00barouoft)

Are you afraid to check? Wouldn’t want to check with the “scholars.” Oh yes, vain “scholarship” is a code word, meaning “disagrees with Mr. Armstrong.”

Have you read Mr. Flurry’s “True History of God’s True Church”? Why not compare it with Andrew Dugger’s and Clarence O. Dodd’s “A History of the True Church” (1936). They are virtually the same.

Anonymous said...

What about Malachi’s Message? Hundreds of you have told me you knew it was “the word of God.” Have you heard of the book “The Letter to Laodicea,” which was published--in stages--from 1986 to 1988? Jules Dervaes, who wrote it, began mailing them to WCG members in 1988—and even sent a copy to Mr. Flurry. (http://thehiddenyears.org/1990/09/26/letter-to-mr-flurry-from-jules-dervaes/)

Try reading the book of Malachi. Maybe—just maybe—could it be that when it talks about “the covenant with Levi,” it actually means Levi? No, no, it must be Herbert W. Armstrong. Could Jacob and Esau really be talking about Jacob and Esau? No, no, it must be talking about Jacobite and Edomite LAODICEANS. Remember everyone, “the word of Mr. Armstrong and Mr. Flurry is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12).
But Elijah must come and restore all things, right? Try reading Matthew 17:12 (without Mr. Flurry whispering commentary in your ear). “But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed.” Jesus is screaming at you: “I said he already came! How much clearer could I be?!”

New Throne, New Stone? Hmmm… why is the British throne still around? Oh, right, it’s corrupt and crumbling, according to Mr. Flurry. The evidence? Prince Harry shenanigans, marrying Meghan Markle, and trying to help people’s mental health (how terrible!). How about Henry VIII having 6 wives and killing 2 of them? What about Mary 1 (“Bloody Mary”) trying to establish Catholicism in England and killing Christians? (That’s nothing compared to Meghan Markle!)

What about our book “He Was Right”? Here’s the secret on how we produced that book: (1) find predictions Mr. Armstrong made, (2) ignore every prediction that was wrong, and (3) write about every prediction that may come true in the future.

The whole theTrumpet.com website is an exercise in this type of logic. We scour the news for events that look like fulfilled prophecy (this is called selection bias). We ignore everything that does not fit with our framework (this is called dishonesty). You then read it and believe it (this is called confirmation bias).

Mr. Flurry often says, “We have been warning American and Britain for 80 years!” He should be saying, “We have been wrong for 80 years.”

I will no doubt be “marked” for this email. I might even get a mention in a sermon or two. They will say, “He is inspired by Satan.” They will warn you, “Look at how clever and powerful the devil is.” But they will not address the facts. They will not give a rebuttal—that would be too dangerous.

But will you prove all things? (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

Many of you have been my friends for years. This college has taught me many things. Its teachers have been generous and kind. This church does many wonderful things—I have many good memories.

But one thing it does not do well is tell the truth.

I hereby renounce every article I have ever written for theTrumpet.com.

If you have any questions, please email me at: kierenjunderwood@gmail.com. Or for more information, see: http://www.exitsupportnetwork.com/. Please forward this email to anyone who you think needs to read it.

(I have scans of the Plain Truth from 1934-1946, where HWA makes all kinds of prophecies about 1936, World War II, and Mussolini and Hitler as the “last resurrection of the HRE,” if anyone would like to see them.)

Thanks for reading,

Since many of us still attend with one of the groups, this may be a good topic:

https://www.tms.edu/blog/how-long-should-a-sermon-be/

People in other churches realize 60 to 80 minutes may be far too long for most people.

In references to prophecies about the end of the world by HWA and team, my parents, who lived in Pasadena at the time, were told in 1960 not to have any children. Matthew 24:19 was the verse so often used. I am glad that they did not listen. I was born in 1962 and am still waiting for the end of the world. I have a daughter that is now 29 years old.

So much for predicting the end of the world. If we read Ezekiel 13:9 and Jeremiah 23:16 we find that HWA, Herman Hoeh, and many others in WCG leadership roles met the qualifications of false prophets.

Speaking of false offices in "the church," Acts 1:12-26

sermon length suggestion again - how about a poll on preferred length - use 10 minute increments starting with 10 all the way up to 120.

I would like to see how many others in COG churches think we go on too long.

Just a word of encouragement. While I attend with a COG, I also meet with people that have been kicked out of our congregation or don't want to meet with a corporate body.

This blog, and others like it, despite mostly disagreeing with the COGs allow an open discussion in a way not currently allowed/tolerated in the actual congregations... yet. I've learned to be more civil and fact focused with scriptures while discussing on these boards. And I appreciate how you allow disagreements (even with your own posts) to be displayed.

I feel this is part of what is missing in most religions is facing disagreement well. We are all amateurs with regards to arguing/debating vs fighting. Like we can't distinguish between them, when in fact discussion is required for healthy relationships and fighting is evidence of unresolved problems that discussion would help solve.

Keep up the good work, we all need open discussions for everyone's sake.

A suggestion Gary to not publish a post or more every day as it can be too much to read through it and all the comments (especially when it’s a post or comment by Dennis :p) as quality is more important than quantity so a top quality post that provokes thought and lively discussion is so much more ideal imo than 3 posts of superficial value that has with it just a handful or two of comments discussing nothing of real importance. Thanks for listening!

Hey you should check out Living Education's Web page and read the artist biographies from the recent art contest. A 7 year old girl apparently has the fruits of the spirit and LCG allowed this to be published....quite the 180 degree from doctrine they teach that to have fruits of the spirit you have to have God's spirit in you though baptism. Didn't know a 7 year old child could have that without baptism. Didn't know 7 year old children could be baptized??

Dave's Latest Prophetic Update
Greetings from Headquarters!

Though our watch continues, it does not appear we have long to wait! Incredible twists and turns related to timing have come clear and make plain why.

Everything you believe is right, with one exception: Passover opens the 84 hours—almost! Rather than closing the 3½ days of Daniel 12:7, it actually falls closer to the start. Many scriptures prove this, but here are two to connect and meditate on.

First, recall how the snare arrives. Christ warned, “Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so THAT DAY come upon you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth” (Luke 21:34-35).

Think. “That day” must start everything. How else could it come as a “snare”? Now read Matthew 26:29: “But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until THAT DAY when I drink it new with you IN my Father's kingdom.”

“That day”—the start!—encompasses Passover, meaning it is early in the 84-hour period. Further proving this, note it is “IN” —inside!—the Kingdom. Put plainly, the Kingdom must begin ahead of Passover.

In Luke 22:16, Christ said He would no longer keep the Passover “until it be fulfilled IN the kingdom of God.” Again, the Kingdom must be set up before Passover. This is where Elijah and the Church “going first” fits.

Do not stop watching—but realize the window is most likely the 24 hours immediately preceding the New Testament Passover. May your self-examination continue to be profitable as we approach this most special of all Passovers.

Prophetic Update
YESTERDAY (Mar 25)

Passover is less than a day away for us at Headquarters, and only hours away for some of you in the Far East. This day is crucial in God’s soon-to-unfold Plan, but for different reasons than we understood yesterday.

The New Testament Passover is in some regards the most important night of the year for Christians. God takes careful note of how His people prepare (or do not prepare) to take the symbols. There is no greater time of self-examination and preparation. It has become clear that God may want ALL brethren worldwide (seventh era included) to take the Passover prior to Christ’s arrival. What could be more crucial in determining the spiritual condition of each of His children?

Notice I Corinthians 11:26: “For as often as you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you do shew the Lord's death till He come.” This could easily be read to mean we take the Passover before Christ comes!

Now think! The actual feast picturing Israel leaving Egypt begins Saturday night—the First Day of Unleavened Bread. This is the Night To Be Much Observed. This is when the physical Passover lamb was eaten anciently. Would this not picture the GREAT Supper? Related, we have studied the Scriptures enough to know the importance of the weekly Sabbath in God’s mind. This scenario also further elevates the seventh day.

In practical terms, if God wants everyone everywhere to take the symbols, the earliest possibility for Christ’s Return would appear to be deep into tomorrow night. Think of yesterday’s announcement. This would mean He arrives to set up the Kingdom with the Old Testament Passover/Night To Be Much Observed still “in” the Kingdom.

All this said, continue to stay alert now—and all the way into the start of the Holy Day season!

Looks like our blue-tasseled buddy Zerubbabel has had a 'change of raiment'.

Maybe he got new garments for Christmas...

“And he answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, ‘Take away the filthy garments from him.’ And unto him he said, ’Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.’” (Zechariah 3:4, 21st Century King James Version).

I feel compelled to comment on LCG elder Winnail's situation with his wife whom he divorced and later remarried a while back. Some have written about this from time to time on this blog. It's a serious matter when an elder commits adultery and, when that happens, the whole church should know about it -- not just the lackey fellow ministers who want to cover it up just to save the corporate face. Apparently Winnail did counsel beforehand with the "elites" who presumably OK'd his remarriage, even though Deut 24:1-4 strongly proscribes against it. And not just Deut 24. In 1 Cor 7:11 the apostle clearly shows that a divorced woman should not remarry and that THE HUSBAND SHOULD NOT DIVORCE HIS WIFE TO FREE HER TO REMARRY! If Winnail's wife was freed by him, then Winnail not only committed a great sin but he also caused his wife to sin when she remarried. (Mark 10:12) Jesus Christ's testimony in Mt 19:9 shows that divorcing for reasons other than fornication is adultery, and that such a divorce tempts both the divorcee and another man to commit adultery as well. See how many times adultery was committed by Winnail's original actions, his, his wife's and her second husband? And there is a fourth sin if he took her back without any remorse or confession on her part.

Someone should tell this to LCG so that the deception and coverup doesn't continue and so that the sinner can repent. The pressure has to come from somewhere if the ministers continue to turn a blind eye and connive at a major sin.

Please post.

Flurry would've been vaccinated if he were able to go to Israel. Left Mar 6, back by Mar. 12. Consider the quarantine period, waiting for test results.

What happened to Darryl Henson and his Church of God group in Arizona/Utah? Does anyone know? His website disappeared.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the info about Henson. I found some stuff online about his cult compound. His followers took him to court and won. Will post something later. Lots to look through

This is a video about the difference between Protestantism and Catholicism. It's interesting how similar LCG is to the Catholic church.

The goal of this site is to make fun of those trying to obey God . Maybe the authors should look at their own
